SOCIALCARBON is a holistic international Greenhouse Gas (GHG) standard focused on Nature-Based Solutions. Projects using our standard go beyond carbon, embedding meaningful social, environmental and economic benefits to the projects and their local stakeholders to foster true permanence.

Why Nature-Based Solutions?

  • Scientists agree that we must protect at least 30% of lands, fresh waters, and oceans by 2030 to effectively address the dual crises of biodiversity loss and climate change.

  • The IPCC emphasizes that nature-based solutions are crucial to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

  • Social elements, providing local livelihoods, are essential for nature-based solutions to succeed as indigenous peoples and local communities are the world's best stewards of forests and biodiversity.

  • Existing environmental asset markets offer scalable solutions but often fall short of their potential in areas like carbon or remain too immature in areas like biodiversity.

The SOCIALCARBON Standard was designed to address systemic challenges facing the scaling up of Nature-Based Solutions. With our origins in the Global South and being the only standard focused solely on Nature Based Solutions, Social Carbon Foundation’s expertise fills a critical market need. All of SOCIALCARBON’s methodologies are aligned with best practice and regularly updated, going further than industry and accreditation requirements to ensure highest integrity results, delivering more for local communities and increased confidence for buyers and investors.  Our beyond-carbon approach means all our projects embed and monitor co-benefits (across additional social, human, biodiversity, financial and natural indicators) ensuring delivery of higher quality, resilient/ truly sustainable project outcomes on the ground.
